Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of our most frequently answered OCD questions.

OCD stands for obsessive compulsive disorder. It is a condition that is diagnosed when a person has obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are intrusive, unwanted, thoughts, images or urges. A compulsion is the action that a person takes to reduce stress associated with obsessive worry. Compulsions can be thoughts or actions.

Absolutely not. There are many different “versions” of OCD that focus on different content. Yes, excessive neatness and obsessive worry about cleanliness are representations of two content areas of OCD. However there are many more. In reality, a person can have obsessive worry about anything.

ERP, or exposure and response prevention therapy, is the gold standard treatment for OCD. It involves exposing people to their feared content for long enough of a period of time that they get used to it. In the simplest terms, ERP helps people to face their fears directly. We do this in a gradual, hierarchical fashion.

We are not in network with any insurance providers. However most of our patients are able to defray some of the cost by using out-of-network benefits from their insurance plan. We provide a super bill that can be submitted for these purposes.

ERP is a time-limited, short term therapy. The majority of our patients are able to complete treatment in 2 to 3 months. For people with moderate or severe OCD, sessions are conducted twice a week.

There is no cure for OCD. Similar to diabetes or hypertension, OCD can be well-managed through therapy and ritual prevention efforts. Although there is no cure, people who are successful at treatment are able to live a full and active life.

OCD is caused by a combination of genetic, biological, and environmental factors. In therapy, we spend all of our energy on the cognitive and behavioral factors that maintain OCD. We spend very little time discussing how a person evolved to have OCD.

When a person describes having intrusive and unwanted thoughts about doing harm to themselves or others, this is what we mean by harm OCD. People with harm OCD, or any other version of OCD for that matter, are no more dangerous than anyone else.
